UUCMP has been serving as a host site for the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP) 2-3 nights a month for many years. Last August, following an I-HELP Sunday evening stay at UUCMP, a clogged toilet overflowed for several hours, flooding upstairs restrooms as well as rooms below, causing $58,000 worth of damage to UUCMP. After extensive efforts to receive adequate compensation over the past ten months, we are still in negotiation with I-HELP’s insurance company. In the course of negotiations we realized there was no written agreement between UUCMP and I-HELP which spelled out both parties’ respective responsibilities. In order to prevent this kind of damage from happening again, the UUCMP Board drafted a Facilities Use Agreement, and requested that I-HELP agree to it by July 1. Unfortunately, I-HELP has not signed the agreement, leaving past and future liability issues unresolved, therefore the UUCMP Board has decided that we can no longer host I-HELP guests at this time. If you have questions please feel free to speak with Katie Hamilton, incoming Board President, or Ray Krise, outgoing Board President.
