On Sat., Feb 11, from 10-12:30, join Whites for Racial Equity for a free showing of The Big Payback, which looks at the first tax-funded reparations bill in the United States and at one local leader as she and her community struggle to realize restitution for its citizens.
The film will be followed by a discussion with Sharon Miller, Carie Broecker and An McDowell, members of the Caste Action Alliance, a group that raises money for African American youth.
?The Caste Action Alliance scholarship is established by CAA with the intention to do our part to address the wide educational disparities experienced by black youth in America resulting from inter- generational systemic inequities and inequalities. We are committed to continue “Rising Up for Social and Restorative Justice” locally, nationally and globally.
Their focus is on educating ourselves and others related to historical and contemporary results of enslavement of black people in America since 1619. The legacy of the American Caste System has particularly excluded African Americans from fair access to wealth-building and economic enhancing systems such as education, home ownership and employment.
The event will take place in person at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 490 Aguajito Rd., Carmel.
