This Sunday’s Guest Speaker: Rev. Mary Katherine Morn

After 30 years in faith-based leadership, the Rev. Mary Katherine Morn, our December 7th guest preacher, joined the UU Service Committee (UUSC) as President and Lead Executive Officer in 2018. She has helped to grow a number of Unitarian Universalist congregations serving their members and the larger community, including congregations in Georgia, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Mary Katherine contributed to efforts for economic, racial, and social justice in Macon, Georgia at the Economic Opportunity Council/Headstart with the NAACP. She also worked deeply in the reproductive justice movement. In Nashville, Tennessee, she collaborated with the Interfaith Alliance and Industrial Areas Foundation. December Shared Plate Recipient – UUSC Guest at Your Table (GAYT)

Every December, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) asks UU Congregations to participate in Guest at Your Table (GAYT), imagining that one of the grass root partners doing justice work around the world is a guest at your table for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This year, the UUCMP Social Justice Committee voted to make Guest at Your Table, the Shared Plate non-profit for December.The UUSC is a sister organization to the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) that bolsters grassrootsled movements for change around the world. Over the years, her passion has grown through ongoing learning and creativity. Her connection to nature began early, spending time outdoors with friends and walking forest trails in Northern Minnesota with her father. Having lived in California for over 20 years, Tami draws inspiration from the state’s diverse natural beauty. November Shared Plate Recipient – Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation

Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation (OCEN) is an historically documented previously recognized tribe. OCEN is the legal tribal government representative for over 600 enrolled members of Esselen, Carmeleno, Monterey Band, Rumsen, Chalon, Soledad Mission, San Carlos Mission and/or Costanoan Mission Indian descent. Despite missionization, government changes, broken treaties, devastation to our culture and loss of homeland, we have survived. We are waking our language, teaching our children and grandchildren their culture. Though other indigenous people may have lived in the area, the area is the indigenous homeland of our people. Social Justice Actions for October

Action Alerts:  Visit FCNL’s Action Center for a list of action alerts and preformatted/editable letters to members of Congress. Hosted by Friends Committee on National Legislation Action Center (FCNL). Action:  Be an Election Poll Worker.  The League of Women Voters of Monterey County is seeking clerks to help with 4-Hour Shifts on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4 th .  The League is staffing two polling places.  A 2.5-hour training is required and is being offered at CSUMB Alumni and Visitor Center in Seaside and in Salinas, at the Monterey County Government offices, 1441 Schilling Place.  Email Dennis Mar for more details.
