YOUNG(ISH) ADULT GROUP

* Sunday Jul 28, 2024 – Young(ish) Adults Lunch Meet Up – After Church! 12-2pm
Let’s Go to the Mall!  Like Robin Sparkles sings, the mall is a place with something for everybody.  Although there isn’t technically a food court at Del Monte Center, grab lunch from your favorite spot and meet at the tables between the Chipotle and Starbucks.  Maybe you’ll visit favorite shops, or go see a movie together.

Dear UUCMP Families,

Summer is a time where families are often traveling or having adventures.  Last week we had 3 children total in attendance – two of which were my own.  Although it was a quiet Sunday, we had a guest facilitator, Max Cajar.  Max worked with our small group of attendees to continue the conversation about our Islands of Personality (an idea from the Disney movie Inside Out!).  We worked on Family Island in conjunction with the Sunday’s service theme, What is a Family.   Our two nursery teachers, Ms. Sunny and Ms. Aungela worked on our lower elementary classroom – they did a beautiful job clearing storage and clutter and getting the space ready for use in the fall.

We have been so lucky to have helping hands in RE – thank you to our volunteers Ali Smith-Shapard, Karen Brown, Max Cajar and Warren Finch for all your contributions this month.  Ali came by on July 5th and we started tackling the classroom together – removing many of the items that had been stored since the onset of the pandemic.  Karen has checked in every Sunday to make sure we had enough adult coverage and does such a wonderful job organizing our RE library of books.  Thank you to Warren Finch will step in as Acting DRE on the 28th while Shannon Co-Leads our service that morning.

This Sunday we welcome back Ms. Rebecca, who has been out of town for a personal matter.  Rebecca has planned a fun activity for our kids this upcoming week – we will be making and testing a variety of paper airplanes and helicopters with our Can Do summer curriculum.

Next Sunday we will make our own ice cream!   And don’t forget!  We have an opportunity to camp out under the stars in August.  Through play, songs and time in nature we will continue to bring the light of summer inward.

Warmly,

Shannon Morrison (She/Her)

Acting Director of Religious Exploration

This Week in Religious Exploration (RE)

* Last Sunday, our Elementary+ group reflected on their own Islands of Personality – based on the idea from the movie Inside Out.  Max Cajar was our guest facilitator to continue the conversation and help kids create their Family Island.

* This Sunday Ms. Rebecca will be back leading us in flight!

This summer we are exploring the practices of curiosity and imagination. We call it Can Do Summer. How can we use our imaginations to be “can do” people, that is, people who collaborate and create something. We are going to make paper airplanes and use our curiosity to explore their gliding, swooping, and flying properties. We have instructions for several versions of a paper airplane, or you can experiment with your own.

* CANCELED! Berry Picking closed for the season at Gizdich Ranch

? Upcoming Summer Activities & Events – July & August

* August 23-25 – UUCMP Big Sur Campout at the Santa Lucia campground!  More information here:

* August 30-31 – Super Flea! A rummage sale fundraiser benefiting UUCMP!  Please see Newsletter for details.

Parents – Did you know RE Staff are at the building starting at 10:00am?

Plan to arrive before service starts and your children can settle in and play before the service while their adults enjoy coffee and conversation.  After the service, children who are not picked up by 11:50 will walk with staff to be reconnected with their families.  If your family will be traveling this summer, email Shannon dre@uucmp.org to let us know so we can plan for attendance.

? Would your child like to light the chalice?

Every Sunday we try to find a child or youth volunteer to light the chalice. It’s a fun way for kids to participate in the service. DRE Shannon can show kids how to do it before the service if it’s their first time or they need a reminder. See Shannon on Sunday morning if interested.

?  VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We will need an extra set (or 2!) of hands for July 28th as our staff will be enjoying a Sunday off for summer travel.  Church members without little ones are encouraged to lend a hand so parents can have a chance to connect with our wonderful community.  A special thank you to our July volunteers Karen Brown, Ali Smith-Shapard, Max Cajar and Warren Finch.  We appreciate your help whether working directly with our kids or to make our UUCMP campus a safe and fun place to be!
