“Day Language, Night Language”

Rev. Dennis Hamilton and Worship Associate Katie Hamilton

Believing literally in the Bible or Koran or other “sacred scripture” is a form of religiously conditioned ignorance, or willing insanity. But reading the scriptures with historical grounding, intelligence, humor and an open mind can be quite rewarding. The parables and miracles and stories become metaphors for love and forgiveness and for the humane treatment of the poor and infirm, not literal fact. Our job is to separate the truth from the metaphor, not just the historical truth but the emotional truth as well. This Sunday we will distinguish between scientific language and the language of art.
