An unusually tall friend, whose stature was regularly remarked upon by those who met her, often explained jokingly that in the course of her life she had had an over-abundance of “growth experiences.” Growth experiences are a polite way of describing the kind of events most of us would rather avoid: accidents, failures, challenges and losses. Spiritual teachings remind us to be thankful for life’s abundant blessings. How can we be grateful when life doesn’t feel great?
