The title comes from the recurring lines in Leonard Cohen’s song Anthem: “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There’s a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.” Quite often it is through the broken places in our lives that some light makes its way through to give us some deeper understandings of ourselves and our world. I’ll speak to this phenomenon both on the personal level, as well as on the cultural, societal, and political levels. The killing of George Floyd, and the January 6th insurrection—to cite but two instances—revealed some terribly disturbing cracks in our socio-cultural life. Is there any light to be found that may shine through these cracks?
